Woolworths has become one of the first to publish a list of foods for recall, because of the dangers of Listeriosis, following the announcement recently that the source of South Africa’s deadly Listeriosis outbreak, which has claimed 180 lives, has been identified as an Enterprise food facility in Limpopo, with the main culprit being polony. (see list of dangerous foods on website below)https://www.sapeople.com/2018/03/04/woolies-publishes-list-items-recall-listeriosis-outbreak/
What causes Listeriosis?
It is caused by eating foods contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) bacterium. In pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth:
- Vegetables can become contaminated from the soil or from manure used as fertilizer.
- Animals can carry the bacteria and can contaminate meats and dairy products.
- Processed foods, such as soft cheeses and cold cuts, can be contaminated after processing.
- Unpasteurized (raw) milk or foods made from unpasteurized milk can be contaminated.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhoea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as, headache. stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. But infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness.
What’s the solution?
Ever since I started working as a reflexologist, which is many years, I have been urging my patients to exclude all processed food from their diets, not only processed meat, which may contain listeriosis, because we don’t know what has been added to the ‘food’ during processing. This is particularly important because of excessive amounts of sugar and/or salt added to processed food, which is detrimental to our health.
