My wife and I recently went for a short holiday to a hotel on the Natal South Coast. On our arrival, we were greeted by a beaming receptionist. “Welcome to our hotel ” he said. We were immediately captivated by his warm, engaging smile. “What’s your name” I asked. “Ntokozo” he replied. “Hi Ntokozo, my name is Arthur” I replied.

Each time I passed the reception desk, during the next few days, I received the same infectious smile, until my curiosity got the better of me. “What does Ntokozo mean?” I eventually asked. “It means joy or happiness”. “That figures “ I thought. “How is your health, Ntokozo?” He looked at me quizzically. “Why do you want to know about my health?” he asked. ”Well you see I’m a health and wellness practitioner and I have noticed that most people who are happy are more likely to be healthy and people who are unhappy are more likely to be unhealthy.”. How old are you”? “I’m 38” he said “and I’ve never been in a hospital”. “That’s wonderful” I said “keep smiling, it will help to keep you healthy” .

Does a sunny outlook mean fewer colds and less heart disease? Do happier people live longer? According to the Harvard School of Public Health, vast scientific literature shows how negative emotions harm the body. Serious, sustained stress or fear can alter biological systems in a way that, over time, adds up to “wear and tear” and, eventually, illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Chronic anger and anxiety can disrupt cardiac function by changing the heart’s electrical stability, hardening of the arteries and increasing systemic inflammation.
