Greetings,

You were not meant to manage your condition. You were meant to live your life. There is a difference — and it is worth living toward.

The Real Cost of Chronic Illness Isn’t on Any Invoice

Ever wonder why you are still paying for treatments that leave you with no reassuring answers?

You wake up every single morning feeling not quite right. You are trapped with a daily fatigue you desperately do not want, while the vibrant energy you actually want remains completely out of reach. You can easily calculate the exact financial toll of your repeat prescriptions and medical bills. However, there is a much bigger, hidden problem at play.
What is the invisible toll this is taking on your life that never shows up on a medical invoice?
Before I retrained, I was a Chartered Accountant for over thirty years. Clients costs were my business.  But  ironically, I spent years overlooking my own health costs, never totaling up the steep cost of ignoring my gut symptoms.

The Costs I Did Count

The ones I noticed were the obvious ones. Medication. The odd specialist consultation. A day here and there when I pushed through rather than stayed home. Small, manageable numbers — the kind you can absorb without ever stopping to add them together.

What I never added to that column was the quieter cost: the meetings where half my attention was somewhere else. The energy that went into managing symptoms instead of doing my actual work. The years I spent, as a professional whose whole job was precision, running at less than full capacity — and never once putting a number on it, because it never showed up as a line item anywhere.

Your Real Cost

Your real cost isn’t the session. It’s staying stuck with the problem you have, instead of getting the results you actually want.

That sentence still haunts me because it exposes my greatest mistake. For years, I weighed the literal cost of treating my Crohn’s—the time and the money—against a blank slate. I never stopped to calculate the true cost of doing nothing.

Once I actually considered — the lost years, the smaller life, the energy spent managing rather than living — the decision to finally ask what was causing it stopped looking like an expense. It looked like the only sensible line item on the page.

What This Might Be Worth Doing

If you’ve been managing something quietly for a while, it might be worth doing the same sum I eventually did — not just what it costs you to address it, but what it’s already costing you, every week, to leave it exactly as it is. Most people only ever calculate one side of that ledger.

If you’d like help looking at the other side of it, I’d be glad to see you.

Small Shifts, Big Results

For the next three days, try keeping an honest tally — not of what treatment or attention would cost you, but of what the thing you’ve been managing quietly is already costing you: in energy, in focus, in the moments you’re only half present for. Write the number down, even a rough one. Most people are surprised by what it actually is.

I’m honoured that you read this. Whatever you’re working towards, I’m rooting for you, but more importantly, make sure you’re rooting for yourself.
