The workplace and its effects on social sustainability and health remain mostly under the radar. Despite the prevalence of workplace stress and its documented ill-effects on physical and mental health, productivity and profitability, strangely—and unfortunately—Workplace stress is largely ignored by employers. 

According to the American Stress Institute:
• Work-related stress causes 120,000 deaths and results in $190 billion in healthcare costs yearly.
• 83% of US workers suffer from work-related stress.
• Stress takes one million workers offline in the U.S. every day.
• 43% of employees — less than half — think their employers care about their work-life balance.
• U.S. businesses lose up to $300 billion yearly as a result of workplace stress.
• Depression costs the American economy $51 billion due to absenteeism and $26 billion in treatments.

What ‘s happening in South Africa?  In all probability a similar pattern.

The consequences? 

Poor performance & productivity. Low morale. Poor motivation. Increased absenteeism and presenteeism and more…….
